Chronic diabetic wound is one of several common complications of diabetes
AMPUTATION

The risk of amputation

in people with diabetes is

15-20
times

HIGHER than normal

Fortunately

85%

of amputation cases are

intervenable because of the

early onset of symptoms

Promoting early diabetic

wound healing is significant

High blood sugar

spells disaster

Excessive blood glucose leads to the production of advanced glycation end products(AGEs) and leads to enhanced inflammation and deficiency of growth factors, further worsening the wound.

In our project GluLeaves, engineered Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells would release synthetic proteins in a specially formulated dressing to block the wound healing difficulties associated with high blood sugar while fighting bacterial infection.

Also, when the wound infection worsens, the dressing will turn red to alert the user to seek medical attention.
